Storekeeper

Working out here at Washery Number Two in West Bokaro Colliery is definitely an experience. It’s a coal area, so everything has a bit of dust on it no matter how much you clean the shelves. I’m Shah Alam and I run the stores here. Hazaribagh is quite a distance away, so we mostly stay on-site during the week. My post office is Ghatotand if you are looking for where the mail goes. The job is basically keeping track of every nut and bolt the washery needs. If a machine breaks down, I’m the one they come shouting at for spare parts. It is a big responsibility but it’s just daily life for me now. The weather in Jharkhand can be tough, either very rainy or very dry. The trucks come in with supplies and I have to sign off on every single item. Sometimes the ledgers do not match up and I have to spend hours finding out where that one piece of pipe went. It’s a lot of walking back and forth between the bins. The colliery is a noisy place but you get used to the sound of the machines after a few weeks. I’ve got a small desk tucked in the corner of the warehouse. It is not a corporate office by any means. Just a lot of metal shelves and heavy items. We do our best to stay organized so the work does not stop. Most days are long but we get through the list.
