Anglo Vernacular School

Up here in Coorg, things move a bit slower, and that's the same for us at Anglo Vernacular School. We are located in Nelliahudikeri, which is a green and quiet area. The school has been around for quite a while now. Most of the kids who come here are from the local coffee estates and small villages around. It gets very damp during the monsoon season, so we spend a lot of time fixing leaks and keeping the books dry. The building is simple, nothing modern, but it feels like home to us. We have teachers who have lived in Coorg their whole lives. We teach a mix of languages as the name suggests. It's a place where everyone knows everyone else’s business. We don't have a big budget for decorations, so the walls are mostly covered with student drawings. The morning assembly is usually held outside unless it’s raining too hard. We have a small staff and we all have to do a bit of everything, from teaching to looking after the grounds. It’s a lot of work but it feels right. People here value having a school nearby so their children don't have to travel too far into the bigger towns. It's just a steady, local school doing what we can for the kids in Nelliahudikeri.
