Out here in Okkal near Kaladi, things move a bit slower than in the middle of Kochi city. Our place is tucked away where it’s a bit greener. We spend a lot of our time dealing with traditional preparations and herbs. It’s the kind of work that takes patience because you can’t really rush how things are made. Most of the people working here have been with us for years and they know the smells of the different oils by heart. It’s not some high-tech lab; it’s more of a traditional space where we follow the old ways of doing things. The weather in Kerala can be tough, especially during the monsoon, but we just keep the production going. We handle the plants and the processing right here on site. Sometimes the courtyard gets busy with deliveries of raw materials coming in from local farmers. It’s a very hands-on job. We don’t spend much time on fancy office work. Most of us are more comfortable out where the actual prep is happening. It’s quiet work, mostly. We just focus on getting the mixtures right and making sure everything is stored properly. It feels like a small community here in Okkal. People know where we are, right by the post office area. We just do our thing every day and try to keep the bottles moving to where they need to go. It is steady work that keeps us all busy.
