Harrisons Malayalam Limited has been around for a long time, and our office here at No. 24/1624 Bristow Road on Willingdon Island reflects that. It’s an old-school kind of place. We don't have the glass walls and neon lights you see in the new IT parks. Instead, we have high ceilings and a lot of history in the walls. Most of the staff here have been with the company for decades, so there is a lot of shared memory about how things used to be. We deal with the administrative side of the business, mostly plantation stuff like tea and rubber, though we’re just the island office handling the logistics and corporate bits. The sea breeze comes off the water, but it’s still pretty humid most days. We have a lot of files, some of them so old the paper is turning yellow. It’s a steady kind of work. We aren't out there trying to reinvent the wheel every day; we’re just making sure the estates are running and the shipments are moving. Bristow Road is a quiet part of the island, which is nice for getting work done. You see the same people every day at the local lunch spots. It’s a very traditional way of doing business, where people still value a face-to-face conversation or a hand-signed letter. We just keep the wheels turning, one day at a time, without making a big scene about it, while the ships pass by.
