Working with steel in Barbil is a specific kind of life that people elsewhere might not understand. Our place is located right behind the Shiv Mandir on Station Road. It is a very busy area because of the trains and all the heavy industry around this part of Orissa. At Ritika Steel Industries, the air usually smells like hot metal and the ground is always a bit red from the iron dust. We deal with Keonjhar’s natural resources every single day. It is a tough job and it is definitely not clean work. The guys at the plant are used to the heat and the constant noise of the machinery running. We do not spend much time in air-conditioned offices. Most of our day is spent out on the floor where the actual steel is being moved and processed. We have some office staff who keep the books in order at the Station Road location, but the heart of it is the production line. Being in this part of Keonjhar means you understand how important steel is to everything around here. We are not a fancy corporation with polished floors and glass walls. Our floors are made of thick concrete and they have seen a lot of use over the years. We just focus on getting the steel out to where it needs to go next. Sometimes the weather makes things difficult, but we just figure it out and keep moving forward.
