About S.P.M. Rice Mill – Food & Beverages in Kendrapara
We’ve been here at Em/5 in Basanti Colony for a good while now. It’s a busy spot, especially when the trucks come in loaded with paddy. The machines at S.P.M. Rice Mill make quite a bit of noise, but that’s just how it goes when you’re processing grain all day. Most of us here grew up nearby, so we know the people who bring their harvest to us. It isn't a fancy setup. We have the big hullers and the sorting area which gets pretty dusty by noon. My clothes are usually covered in husk by the time I head home. Sometimes the power goes out and everything stops, which is a headache, but we just sit outside and wait it out. We handle mostly local rice varieties. It’s hard work, lifting those heavy sacks and making sure the grain is clean before it goes out. The floor is concrete and stays cool in the morning, but the heat builds up fast once the motors start humming. We don't have a big office or anything, just a small desk where we keep the registers and the scales. It’s just a regular mill doing regular work for the folks around the district. We try to keep things moving so no one is waiting too long at the gate. It’s a simple life, but the rice keeps everyone fed, so we keep at it every day.
