Over in the Gopalpur Prathamakhandi area of Kuakhia, you’ll find our producer company. We are located at the house of Padan Das in Jajpur. The name is a bit long, but Omm Shanti Tassar Handloom and Tassar Reeling is basically about the local silk work we do. In this part of Orissa, tassar is a big deal. We have people who know exactly how to reel the silk and work the looms. It’s a very traditional process, and it takes a lot of patience. The air in the workspace always smells a bit like the cocoons and the raw silk. We have these big wooden looms that make a specific clicking sound when they’re running. It’s a sound we’ve all grown up with around here. We work together as a group to make sure the reeling is done right before it ever goes to the weavers. It’s not like a modern factory with robots; it’s all human hands doing the work. Sometimes we sit outside under the shade to sort the materials when the weather is nice.
