Compact Lamps Pvt Ltd is out in Piparsana, in the industrial area of Udham Singh Nagar. It’s a big plot, labelled C and D, so we have plenty of room for the factory floor. Being away from the main city means it’s a bit of a drive to get here every morning, but it’s quieter than being in the middle of town. We spend our days focused on the machines that make the lamps. It’s a lot of glass and heat in the production area, so we have to be quite careful. The staff comes in from the nearby villages, and we’ve all worked together for quite some time now. The office part of the building is just a few desks with some old computers and a lot of logbooks. We have a big gate at the front where the trucks come in to load up the finished goods. Sometimes the power goes out, and we have to wait for the generators to kick in so we can get back to work. It’s a dusty environment because of the nearby fields, but we try to keep the machinery clean. We don’t have a fancy reception area or anyone to greet you at the door; usually, you just find one of us walking around the floor. It’s a straightforward business, making sure the lights work before they get boxed up and sent out to the distributors.
