This location for Heidelberg Cement is out in the village of Ammasandra, which is part of Turuvekere in the Tumkur district. Being in rural Karnataka is a lot different than being in the city. Things move a lot slower here, which isn't always a bad thing. We are surrounded by green fields and open space. The air is definitely cleaner than what you get in Bangalore. Most of the people working here come from the nearby villages. We all know each other’s families and what’s happening in the local area. The office is pretty basic. We have the essentials to get the work done, but nothing more. It’s part of the landscape now. In the rainy season, the roads get a bit muddy, so we have to be careful with the bikes. We deal with a lot of the local logistics for the cement. It’s honest work. We don’t have fancy lunch rooms. We just eat our tiffins together under the shade when it’s hot. Sometimes a cow wanders near the gate, and someone has to go shoo it away. It’s just how life is in Tumkur. You wake up, you come to the village office, and you do your bit for the day. There is no need for anything complicated. We just keep the operations going smoothly without any fuss. It’s a quiet corner of the world.
