B Ch Sahu Rice Mill

The mill is situated at No. 33 on Masthan Patty Road, right in the Dr. Kabeer Nagar area. We are quite close to the Sivagangai Main Road, so it is easy to find if you are looking for the sound of the rice hullers. The building is large and open to let the air through, but it still gets very dusty when we are processing the paddy. We have sacks of rice stacked up nearly to the ceiling in some parts of the warehouse. It’s a lot of physical work, moving those heavy bags around and making sure the machines are oiled and working right. My father started this work and now we just carry it on the same way. The road near us is always busy with people heading toward the main road, and we get a lot of dust from the passing vehicles mixing with the rice husks. We don't have a fancy waiting room or anything, just a few wooden benches where people sit and wait while their grain is being processed. It gets very hot under the tin roof in the summer, so we usually take a long break in the middle of the day when the sun is at its worst. Our neighbors know us well, and we often trade news about the local crops while we work. It is a loud, messy, and honest way to make a living here in Kabeer Nagar.
