Working out of House No.1018 in Urban Estate makes things feel pretty grounded. It’s not a big glass office building, just a regular place where we keep our drafting boards and rolls of tracing paper. Most mornings start with the sound of the neighbor's dog barking and the smell of breakfast from the kitchen. We’ve turned the front rooms into our workspace. There are pencils rolled under the cabinets and different colored markers scattered over the tables. It gets a bit cramped when we have a few people over to look at drawings, but we manage. Living and working in the same area means we see the same faces every day. Urban Estate is quiet for the most part, which helps when you’re trying to focus on a difficult layout. We don’t have a sign outside that lights up or anything. People usually find the gate and just walk in. The light is good in the afternoons, which is when most of the actual drawing gets done. Sometimes we spend hours just arguing over where a wall should go or how to fix a leaky roof detail. It’s not always pretty, and the floor is usually covered in eraser dust. We just keep at it, one drawing at a time, making sure the measurements are right before we send them off. It’s a simple way to spend the day, really.
