Sarswati Stone Industries

We are based in Navagam, which is in the Kheda district. This is where Sarswati Stone Industries has its yard. We work with natural stones, mostly cutting and shaping them. It’s physical work and the ground is always covered in stone dust and water. We’ve been in this village for a long time. People around here know us and our families. We aren't looking to be some giant company. We just want to produce work that lasts. The yard is usually loud with the sound of saws cutting through the blocks. We get the raw stone in and then we have to figure out the best way to cut it. It’s a process that takes time. Sometimes the weather makes it hard to work outside, but we do what we can. We don't have a marketing department. Our work usually speaks for itself when people see it in buildings nearby. We take pride in being from Kheda and providing jobs for a few local guys. It’s a simple life and the work is tough, but we like it. We usually finish up when it gets dark and start again early the next day. It’s just us and the stone out here in Navagam. Sometimes we have to repair the machines ourselves when they break down because a mechanic is hard to find on short notice. We share a meal together in the afternoon under the shade of the mango tree at the edge of the property.
