Bruso Spices

Bruso Spices is down at 211 Beach Road in Colachel. You can hear the ocean from the back of the shop if the wind is right. We spend a lot of time sorting through different types of spices that come in from the surrounding areas. The salt air can be a bit tough on the building, so we’re always painting or fixing something. It’s a family-run business, and we’ve been here for quite some time now. We don't have a big staff, just a few local people who know their way around a sack of peppercorns. We keep things pretty straightforward. There are no fancy displays, just good quality stuff in bags and jars. Sometimes the tourists stop in while they’re walking along the beach, but mostly we serve the locals and small restaurants. We’ve had some tough seasons with the rain, but we always manage to keep the stock dry. It’s a lot of manual work, weighing and sealing everything by hand. We like the pace of life here by the sea. It’s not as fast as the big cities, and we prefer it that way. We just keep our heads down and focus on the spices. It’s what my father did, and it’s what I do now. It is a steady life and we are happy to be part of the community here in Colachel. Every day brings something a little different.
