V Krishna Kumar General Store has been a fixture on Canal Road in Kanpur for quite a few years now. We are situated in the Ghasiyari Mandi area, which is a very active part of the city. Being in a mandi means there is always noise and movement outside our doors. Our store is small and focuses on providing the daily necessities to the local families living nearby. We carry everything from cooking oils and flours to smaller things like pens and notebooks. The shelves are quite high, so I often have to use a small ladder to reach the top items. It’s not a fancy place with bright lights or air conditioning. It’s just a regular shop where you can get what you need without any fuss. The floor is usually a bit uneven, and the paint is peeling in some corners, but we keep the products clean and fresh. We don't spend money on marketing because the people in Ghasiyari Mandi already know where we are. Dealing with customers takes up most of our day, from the early morning milk buyers to the late-evening shoppers getting things for dinner. Sometimes we run out of specific items if the transport from the main market is slow, but that’s just life in Kanpur. We just try to be helpful and keep the store running smoothly for everyone who stops by our little spot on Canal Road every single day.
