Soni Provision Store

Over here at 366-D in Damodar Nagar, life moves at a pretty regular pace. Being in the Barra area of Kanpur, we see a lot of the same people every single day. The store is just a part of the house, really. We keep the shelves filled with lentils, soaps, and those big plastic jars of biscuits that children like to look at. The street outside is not too wide, so it stays mostly quiet except for the occasional scooter passing by or a neighbor calling out. I spend a good part of my morning talking to the suppliers and making sure the bags of flour are stacked away from any dampness on the floor. The floor is just plain tiles that we mop every morning before the first person arrives. We do not do any big advertising or anything like that. People just know we are here at this address. If someone needs a particular brand of tea or a specific soap, they ask and we try to get it next time the delivery truck comes. It is a lot of standing and moving boxes, but it keeps us busy. In the evenings, the light from the streetlamp hits the front window and that is usually when we start thinking about closing up. It is honest work and we have been doing it this way for quite some time now. We are just a local provision store for the people living nearby.
