Sai Jee General Store

The shop is right here at 84/104 in Charwalo Nagar. It's not a very big place but we have what people in Chamanganj usually need for their kitchens. Kanpur gets really hot in the summer months so the ceiling fan stays on all day long. Sometimes the power goes out and we just sit outside on the stool until it comes back. Dealing with the daily crowd can be tiring but it is what it is. We start quite early in the morning when the milk crates arrive. The street gets a bit noisy with all the rickshaws passing by but you get used to it after a few years. Most people who live around here stop by for small things like salt or soap or maybe some snacks for their kids. We don't have fancy shelves or bright lights like the big malls. It’s just a regular counter and lots of boxes stacked up in the back. The floor is old stone and it’s hard to keep it perfectly clean with all the dust flying around from the road. Kanpur is a dusty city anyway. We try to keep things organized so we can find what a customer asks for quickly. It’s a simple life running a store in this part of town. Nothing much changes from day to day here. You see the same faces every morning and evening.
