S. K. String Overseas

If you find yourself in Anwarganj, you might end up in Phool Wali Gali. That’s where we are, at 78/296 in S.D. Colony. It’s one of those narrow lanes in Kanpur where you have to watch your step. S. K. String Overseas has been in this spot for quite a while now. The whole area smells like history and commerce. We deal with strings and threads, so there are always bobbins and rolls stacked up to the ceiling. It’s a bit dark inside sometimes because the buildings are so close together, but we have our lights. We spend the day packing orders and checking the quality of the string. It’s repetitive work, but we’ve gotten used to it over the years. The lane is always crowded with carts and people moving goods. You can hear the sounds of the market right outside the door. We aren’t a big factory with thousands of workers; we are just a small group doing our bit in the textile trade. We know the other shopkeepers on the street, and we often share news over a cup of tea. Life in the colony moves at its own speed. We just try to stay organized and get the shipments out to whoever needs them. It’s a dusty, busy, and real place to work. We like the grit of it and just keep the business moving. Most of our evenings are spent finishing up the last few packages.
