If you are looking for us, we are right on the bypass near Mangla Vihar-II. We are quite close to Guru Har Rai School, so we hear the bells and the kids sometimes. Our building at Plot No. 86 is basically just a big room full of sewing machines and stacks of heavy fabric. We make workwear, so it’s all about things like uniforms and thick trousers that people wear in factories or on construction sites. The machines make a lot of noise, a constant clicking and whirring from the moment we start in the morning. Kanpur gets very dusty and hot, so we usually have the big metal shutters rolled up to get some air in. There are rolls of cloth everywhere and thread ends on the floor. It’s not a fancy place at all. We have a small crew and most of us have been here for years. We know the machines and we know how to fix them when they jam. Lunch is usually something quick brought from home. We don’t have a big sign or a lobby, people just come to the side door if they need to talk to us. It’s just a busy workshop where we try to get the sewing done and the orders packed up by the end of the day. We stay pretty focused on the piles of fabric in front of us.
