In P Block Kakadev, things move pretty fast because of all the students and coaching centers nearby. Our shop is at 117/52, tucked away in a spot that stays busy almost all the time. Kanpur weather is either too hot or too cold, but we are always here. We carry a lot of snacks, pens, and registers because that’s what the boys and girls living in the hostels need most. It’s a small shop, maybe even a bit cramped when three or four people are standing inside. We keep the pulses and grains in big open bags so people can see what they’re getting. The floor is concrete and we have an old wooden counter that’s been here since we opened. There’s no air conditioning, just a ceiling fan that makes a bit of noise. We don't spend money on advertising or making the place look pretty. It’s just a store for daily needs. We know the milk delivery guy by name and we know which neighbors are going to complain about the price of onions this week. Sometimes the power goes out and we have to use a flashlight to find the matchboxes. It’s just a regular Kanpur life, nothing fancy about it. We just keep the shelves full and open the shutters every morning at the same time. There are always boxes of snacks arriving or being emptied, and the sound of the street never really stops.
