Dk General Store

Over in the Ashok Nagar area of Kanpur, our shop is a familiar spot for the people living nearby. Dk General Store isn't very large, but we try to pack in as much as we can on the wooden shelves that go all the way to the ceiling. I usually have to use a small stool or a reaching stick to get the soap boxes or the shampoo bottles from the top. The street is mostly residential, so it is quiet in the afternoons when everyone is resting. That is when I usually organize the stock or count the coins in the drawer. The mornings and evenings are much busier with people coming home and realizing they forgot to buy milk or bread. We keep all the basic things like flour, rice, different oils, and cleaning supplies. Sometimes the kids come in with a few coins for some hard candy or a small toy. I like talking to the elders who have lived in Ashok Nagar since they were young. They have so many stories about how the city has changed. The shop sign is a bit faded from the sun, but everyone knows we are here. It is just me and one helper who comes in for a few hours. We don't have any big plans, we just want to make sure we have what the neighbors need when they walk through the door. It is a simple business.
