Dhamendra General Store

We opened this shop here on Ashok Marg Road quite a long time ago. Kanpur is a busy place and this street stays noisy from morning till the stars come out. I usually start the day by cleaning the front steps and arranging the snack packets so people can see them easily. It is not a very big space but we keep almost everything a kitchen needs like oil, salt, different types of lentils, and cleaning soaps. Some days the fan doesn't work right and it gets hot inside, but that is just how things go. Most of our customers are folks who live right behind the shop or walk past every day on their way to work. We know most of them by their faces and what they usually like to buy. Sometimes we run out of things like certain biscuits and have to wait for the delivery truck which can be slow in the city traffic. I spend a lot of time sitting on the wooden stool behind the counter. My nephew helps me out when his school is over because the evening rush can get a bit much. It is just a simple general store, nothing fancy about it. We just try to keep the shelves full so people don't have to go too far for their daily needs. The floor is a bit worn out but it has seen many years of people walking in and out. Every day is pretty much the same here.
