Baba General Store

Baba General Store is located in Swaroop Nagar, Kanpur, near the Sharma Nursing Home at 113/338. Because we are so close to the nursing home, we get a lot of people coming in for things like bottled water, juices, and basic toiletries. It’s a busy little corner of Kanpur. I started this store to serve the people living in the apartments around here. We have everything from notebooks for the school kids to washing powder for the homes. The shop isn't very big, so I have to use every inch of wall space for shelves. I have strings hanging from the ceiling to hold the small packets of chips and shampoo. It looks like a bit of a jungle sometimes. I wake up early to open the shutters because people need their milk and bread before the nursing home shift starts. My wife helps me in the afternoons so I can take a small nap. Kanpur can get very cold in the winter, so we keep a small heater behind the counter to stay warm. We know almost everyone who walks in by their first name. It’s that kind of neighborhood. I don’t believe in any fancy business tricks, I just try to be honest and keep the shelves full. If someone needs something I don't have, I try to get it for them by the next day.
