Rajpur Organic Farming Producer Company Limited is tucked away in Kandhi, Kanpur Dehat. Ashwani Kumar is the one running things from the house there. We focus on organic farming because that is what seems to make sense for the future of this area. The soil in Kanpur Dehat has been used for so long, we wanted to try something that helps it out a bit. Most days, you’ll find us out in the back or sitting around the table looking at maps of the plots. It isn't a fancy setup by any means. There are plenty of mud tracks and the sound of the village all around us. We are just local people who know how to farm. We started the company because it makes it easier to sell what we grow as a group rather than everyone doing it alone. It’s a lot of work to keep things organic since you can’t just spray whatever you want. We spend a lot of time weeding and checking the leaves for bugs. We talk to the elders about how they used to do it before all the chemicals came along. It’s a bit like going backwards to go forwards. We don’t have an office in the city, just this spot in Kandhi where we do our business and keep our records. It works for us. Usually, the dogs are sleeping on the porch and there is some grain drying out front if the sun is out. We're just trying to do our part.
