Rajeswari Handlooms

Rajeswari Handlooms is situated right in Azhikode, which is a part of Kannur. If you come visit, you’ll hear the rhythmic sound of the looms working from the street. It’s a sound we’ve grown up with and never really notice anymore. Our workspace is filled with threads of all colors and big wooden frames. It’s not a factory with huge machines; it’s more about hands doing the work. There’s dust from the yarn in the air, and we usually have the windows wide open to catch the sea breeze. It’s a bit messy with scraps of fabric on the floor, but that’s just part of the process. We don’t have a marketing team or a big office. It’s mostly just family and a few local weavers who know the craft well. We sell what we make to people who appreciate the hand-done look. Sometimes the colors don’t come out exactly the same every time, but that’s what happens when you’re not using big industrial vats. We take our time with things. If a thread breaks, we stop and fix it by hand. It’s slow work, and it doesn’t make us rich, but it’s what we know how to do. The post office is nearby, so we walk our packages over there ourselves. We’ve been here in Kannur for a long time, and we don’t plan on going anywhere else. It’s a quiet life, mostly focused on the threads and the patterns.
