If you go near the bus stand in Kelakam, you will find Chettayis Chits Private Limited. We are in Room No. KPXIII/137. It’s a handy spot because everyone passes by the bus stand at some point. Being in Thalassery, Kannur, we see a lot of people coming and going. The office is small and tucked away, but it’s always busy. We focus on the local chit funds that people use to save up for things. It’s a traditional way of doing things here in Kerala. We have some plastic chairs for people to sit on while they wait their turn. The noise from the buses pulling in and out is something we’ve just gotten used to over the years. Our staff are all locals from around Kannur. We speak the way everyone else does and don’t use any big words. People come in with their passbooks, and we make the entries. It’s a lot of manual work, keeping everything updated. Some days are slow, but usually, when the buses arrive, a group of people will walk in at once. We’ve been here for a bit now, and the shopkeepers nearby are all friends. It’s a very grounded kind of business. We don’t have air conditioning or anything, just some old ceiling fans that hum.
