About Kanya Handicrafts – Art & Craft in Kanniyakumari
If you walk down Sannathi Street, right opposite Hotel Samudra, you’ll find Kanya Handicrafts. It’s a busy little street, especially with people going to the temple nearby. We’ve been here for a long time, surrounded by all the local shops. We have all sorts of handicrafts piled up inside. It’s not the most organized place in the world, but there is a lot to look at. We don't have a big mission statement or a marketing plan. We just open up the shop in the morning and wait for people to come in. Some people are just tourists looking around, while others are locals looking for something specific. We try to keep things simple. Dealing with handmade items means every piece is a bit different, and we like that. It feels more real than stuff made in a factory. The shop can get a bit crowded on festival days when the street is full of people. We just sit out front or behind the counter and chat with whoever walks in. It’s a slow-paced kind of life compared to the big city shops. We don't do much online; we prefer it when people come in and actually see the work for themselves. It’s just how we’ve always done it here on Sannathi Street. We're here every day, just dusting the shelves and talking to the people who stop by our little shop.
