We are over at 17 Griffith Road in Pallavaram, though some of the older mail still shows us as Old No. 25. It’s an easy mistake to make if you’ve lived around here for decades. The leather business keeps us pretty busy from Monday to Saturday. There is always that specific smell of leather in the air that you just get used to after a while. We do a lot of exporting, so there’s always a bit of stress about deadlines and shipping containers. The office isn't anything special. We have some old wooden chairs and filing cabinets that are stuffed full of papers. It gets quite warm in the afternoons, so we keep the fans going at full speed. We’ve got a small crew here and most of them have been with us for a long time. We know each other’s families and what’s going on in the neighborhood. Dealing with the leather means our hands aren't always clean, but that’s part of the trade. We spend a lot of time on the phone or checking the samples against the orders. Sometimes the trucks have trouble turning into the road because it’s not as wide as it used to be. We just manage the best we can. It’s a steady job and we like the rhythm of it. Being a private limited company sounds formal, but we’re just regular folks working.
