Jkm Garments

Jkm Garments is located in Pallaegai Village, which is part of the Thirukazhukundram area. It’s a bit of a drive to get out here, but it’s where we do all our daily work. The building is at number 210. It’s more of a workspace than a fancy showroom. We have several sewing machines lined up in rows, and the sound of them running is what you hear all day long. The village is quiet otherwise, which is nice for staying focused on the stitching and the patterns. We get the fabric delivered in big trucks from the city, and then we have to unload everything by hand and sort it by color and type. Most of the people working here live close by in the village, so they just walk or bike to the unit. We don’t have air conditioning, just some big ceiling fans that hum constantly and move the warm air around. In the summer, it gets really hot, so we take longer breaks in the shade of the trees outside. We make all sorts of garments, mostly basic items that people use every day like plain shirts or trousers. There’s always a pile of cloth scraps on the floor by the end of the shift that needs to be swept up and bagged. We don't spend much time on decorations or anything like that. The walls are mostly bare except for some calendars and maybe a few notes pinned up about the current orders we are working on. It’s just a plain, honest garment unit where we try to get the work done.
