Down on Gangai Amman Koil Street in Ramapuram, that’s where you’ll find A.T.S.Tools & Engineering. Our door is at number 1/108. It’s a typical Chennai street, often busy with people and scooters zooming past at all hours. We’ve been here for several years now, working out of this small facility. Most of our work involves precision tools and bits of engineering stuff that people need for their own shops. The humidity in Chennai can be tough on the equipment, so we spend a lot of time cleaning and oiling things to keep the rust away. The shop floor is small, so we have to be smart about where we put everything. It’s a bit of a maze sometimes. We have a few regular customers who drop by for a chat and a cup of tea while they wait for their parts to be finished. We don't have a big staff, just a few of us who know the trade well. There’s no fancy signage or big glass windows to show off. It’s just a practical workspace where we get things done. Sometimes the power goes out and we have to wait a bit for it to come back, but that’s just part of living and working here. We don't make a big deal out of what we do. We just make the tools, check the measurements twice, and hand them over. It’s a quiet life, mostly, once the machines stop.
