Kamakshi Fashions

Kamakshi Fashions is up on Bhubaneswar Barua Road in the Sarania Hills area of Guwahati. The road is a bit of a climb. It is a pretty part of the city with a lot of trees and old houses. Our shop is not very large, but we pack a lot into it. We have rolls of fabric and finished pieces hanging everywhere. It smells like new cloth and sometimes incense. We don't have a big fancy storefront. It’s more like a place where you come to sit and talk about what you want made. There is a small bench for visitors. We spend our days cutting and measuring. Sometimes the power goes out and we have to wait for the generator to kick in. The hills make the weather a bit nicer than the lower parts of the city. We get a good breeze through the door. We have a couple of sewing machines that are always humming. It’s a steady sound that we are used to. Our neighbors are mostly families who have lived here for generations. We see the same people walking past every morning. It’s a very personal way to run a business. We aren't looking to be a huge brand. We just like making clothes and being part of this community. It’s a lot of work but it feels right being here. There is a small crack in the front window that we taped up last year to keep the monsoon rain from dripping in.
