Being out in Ilapoor in the Kamareddy district means we are right in the thick of the farming life. My place is at house 13-85, and you can usually see the tractor parked nearby when it isn't working in the fields. It’s a big piece of machinery and it takes a lot of looking after. I spend my weekends mostly cleaning the mud off the tires or checking the oil. When the harvest season starts, there isn't much time for sleep. Everyone in the village needs something moved or a field prepped, and the tractor is always in demand. The trailer gets used for everything from hauling crops to moving building materials for a new house. It’s loud and it shakes, but it’s reliable. I’ve lived in Mandal Lingampet for a long time, so I know everyone’s land and where the soft spots in the dirt are. The air smells like diesel and turned earth most of the time. It’s physical work, and by the end of the day, I’m usually pretty worn out. We don’t have a website or anything like that; people just walk over to the house or shout across the field when they need the tractor. It’s a simple way of doing business that has worked for us for years. The weather is the biggest boss we have, telling us when we can work and when we have to wait for the rain to stop.
