Appaiah Farm

Down here in Kalooru, the weather changes fast and that’s what dictates our days. Appaiah Farm has been in the family for a long time, tucked away in this part of Kodagu where the greenery never seems to end. We spend most of our time out in the fields or checking on the crops. It’s hard work and your boots are always muddy, especially when the monsoon hits. We don't have a big office or a team of people in suits. It’s just us and a few local workers who know the land as well as we do. Growing things takes patience and you can’t really rush what the soil wants to do. Some years are better than others depending on how much rain we get. In the evenings, things get real quiet around Kalooru. You can hear the insects and the wind in the trees. We mostly focus on making sure the plants are healthy and the harvest is handled right. It’s not a glamorous life but it’s what we know. People ask how we manage out here away from the city, but we like the space. Everything we do at the farm is pretty straightforward. We plant, we wait, and then we pick. There’s always a fence to fix or a tool to sharpen. It keeps us busy from sunrise until it’s too dark to see the rows anymore, which is fine by us.
