Shree Umiya Saw Mill

Running a saw mill is a lot of hard work and we’ve been doing it here in Kalol for a long time. You can find Shree Umiya Saw Mill right on Station Road, across from the Bank of Baroda. It’s easy to spot because of the stacks of logs and the sound of the saws running through the day. There is always sawdust in the air and on our clothes, but we don't mind it. The wood comes in from different places and we spend hours cutting it down to size. It’s physical work that keeps us moving. We deal with all sorts of people, from builders to locals just needing a few planks for a home project. The location is good because the station road is always busy, though the traffic can be a pain when the trucks are trying to unload. We’ve grown used to the noise of the trains and the bank customers parking their bikes everywhere. We don't have a fancy office; we just have a small desk tucked in the corner where we keep the books. Most of our day is spent out on the floor with the wood. Gandhi Nagar district is a big place, but Kalol feels like home to us. We just keep our heads down, do the sawing, and try to keep the yard organized as best as we can. It's messy and loud but that is the reality of our everyday life here. We don't need much else to stay happy.
