Vedanta Alumina Limited,Orissa

The mechanical department for the Orissa operations is based out of Lanjigarh in the Kalahandi district. We are the ones who handle the nuts and bolts of the Vedanta Alumina plant. The workshop is a large, open space that always smells like welding smoke and machine oil. We have a long row of workbenches where we pull apart motors and fix whatever has broken down. It is a noisy place, and the floor is usually covered in metal shavings. We don't have any air conditioning, so we just rely on the big overhead fans to keep the air moving during the hot months. The team here is a bunch of practical people who don't care much for office politics or fancy clothes. We wear our work uniforms until they are worn out. Kalahandi is a tough place to work sometimes because of the weather and the distance from the big towns, but we have a good group of people here. We spend our days checking gauges and making sure the lines are running. Lunch is often a quick meal brought from home, eaten while sitting on a crate. We don't have any promotional posters or mission statements on the walls. The only things we hang up are safety charts and tool inventories. It is an honest, hardworking environment where the goal is just to keep the machines in good shape. We have been doing this for a long time and know the plant inside out.
