Bhagwati Rice Mills

If you drive down Shekhu Road, you will see Bhagwati Rice Mills right there. We have a big open yard where we spread things out. It's a busy place, especially when the season is at its peak. There are always people coming and going. Most of us live nearby, so it doesn't take long to get to work. We start early, usually with a quick cup of tea while we look at what needs to be sorted for the day. The machines have their own rhythm, a sort of humming that you get used to. Sometimes a belt breaks or a motor acts up, and we have to spend the afternoon fixing it. That is just part of the job. It’s not a clean place, rice husks get everywhere, even in your shoes. We don't spend much time on the computer unless we really have to. Most of our business is done face to face right here on Shekhu Road. We see the same faces every year. It’s nice to have that kind of routine. When the sun gets too hot in the afternoon, we take a bit of a longer break under the shade of the trees near the gate. Then it's back to it. The bags are heavy and the days are long, but we are used to it by now. It’s just a regular mill doing regular work for the people around here. We don't ask for much more than that.
