Saikia Hardware Stores

Saikia Hardware Stores is out in Dhekiakhowa Village. We are right in the Lahdoigarh Chariali area, near the post office. If you look across the road, you can see the Lahdoigarh Thana, so it’s easy to find us. Being in Jorhat Takula, we get a lot of people from the nearby villages coming in for things like nails, hammers, or pipes. The shop is full of all sorts of small items and sometimes it takes me a minute to find exactly what someone is looking for. We have stacks of things in the corners and on the high shelves. It’s a bit of a maze inside. I like being near the police station because it’s a landmark everyone knows. The village is usually quiet except for the market days when everyone comes out. Running a hardware store means your hands are always a bit dirty from grease or metal. We don't have any fancy displays. People just come in and ask for what they need for their farms or houses. I spend my day talking to the locals about their projects. It might be a new fence or fixing a leaky tap. There is always something to do. The weather in Jorhat can be quite damp, so we have to watch out for rust on the tools. It’s just a regular village shop where we try to have what the neighbors need for their daily work.
