Our shop is at Om Shanti No. 573 on 9th C Road in Sardarpura. It’s been in the family for a long time. We open up the shutters every morning and start by cleaning the glass cases. There is always dust coming in from the road. Sardarpura is a busy place, and 9th C Road has its fair share of traffic. We sit behind the counters waiting for people to walk in. Sometimes it’s quiet for hours, and then three families come in at once. We show them what we have in the drawers. It’s not a big fancy showroom with bright lights and music. We have simple seating and some mirrors on the walls. Most of our day is spent looking at small pieces and talking to customers about their families. We know a lot of the history of the people who come here. We don’t do much advertising. People just know where we are. We have a small safe in the back where we keep the important stuff. The ledger stays on the main desk. It’s a long day, usually ending late in the evening when the street gets a bit quieter. We just keep doing what our fathers did before us. It’s a steady life here in Sardarpura. We take our lunch in the back room and keep an eye on the door. It’s a simple way to spend the years.
