Pramod Provision Store

Living and working near the Baran Seeswali Chauraha means there is never a quiet moment. The traffic is always moving and the noise of horns is just part of the background now. At Pramod Provision Store, the day starts with rolling up the metal shutter which always sticks a little on the left side. We have rows of steel bins for the loose grains and pulses. The smell of raw spices and soap usually hangs in the air. We keep the registers near the front because people are often in a hurry to get back to their scooters. The shelves go all the way to the ceiling, so we have to use a small wooden stool to reach the top rows where the less popular items stay. Sometimes we find a bit of dust on the bottles of oil that haven't moved in a week. We don't have a big staff, just a couple of us moving things around and helping people find where the salt or the tea leaves are kept. The light coming in from the Chauraha is quite bright in the summer, making the front of the store very hot. We have a plastic curtain to keep some of the heat out. It isn't a fancy setup by any means. It is just a place to buy your daily groceries without any fuss. Most people who stop by are locals who live just a few streets away and they know us by name.
