We operate Dalmia Cement Ltd. from Thang Skai, which is near Post Lumshnong in the Jaintia Hill district. It is a very specific part of the country to be working in. The terrain around the hills means we have to be very careful with how we move the cement bags. Our facility is simple and built to withstand the heavy rainfall we get in this region. The workers here are mostly locals who know the roads and the hills well. We don't have much in the way of fancy equipment; it is a lot of manual labor and basic machinery to keep things moving. The mist often rolls in during the mornings, making it hard to see very far, but we start our shift regardless. Most of our days are spent checking the inventory and making sure the storage areas are dry. In Jaintia Hill, you have to stay ahead of the dampness. We talk to the truck owners who make the long hauls up and down the hills. It is not an easy job, but it is what we do. The office is just a small room with a few ledgers and a wooden table. We don't do any big marketing or have a sales team running around. We just provide the cement to whoever needs it for their projects in this part of the state and keep the gates open through the week. It’s hard work but it keeps us going.
