Poorvanchal Hospitals has been a fixture here in Jaunpur for quite some time now. This city has so much history, and we are just a small part of its modern daily life. Our building isn't anything special to look at, just a plain concrete structure that stays cool in the summer heat if we keep the blinds drawn. The streets in Jaunpur can be very tight, so getting to us involves navigating through some busy alleys and avoiding the rickshaws. We have a steady flow of people coming in from the surrounding villages. Most of them arrive early in the morning, so our staff has to be ready with their tea before the doors even open. The waiting room has a tiled floor that we scrub every evening. We have a big desk where the registrations happen, and it is usually piled high with notebooks and pens. We don't spend money on fancy decorations or expensive signs. We would rather spend it on keeping the lights on and making sure we have enough bandages and medicine. Sometimes the monkeys on the roof make a lot of noise, and we have to shoo them away so the patients can rest. It is a busy, slightly messy, but very real place. We are just here to do the work that needs doing for the people of Jaunpur. Every day is different, but the goal is always the same for us. It’s a lot of work but it’s our life.
