Shayam Rice Mill

Out on Dumka Road, you’ll find Shayam Rice Mill in Kelahi Village. We are part of the Jamtara Block, and it’s a pretty rural setting. If you’re looking for us, just head down the road and look for the building with the most activity. Being a rice mill, there is always the sound of machinery and the smell of grain in the air. It’s a constant hum that we’ve all grown used to. We process a lot of rice for the local area, working with the farmers in Jamtara District. The work is physically demanding. There is a lot of lifting heavy sacks and making sure the machines are running correctly. Sometimes things break down and we have to fix them ourselves, which usually means getting some grease on our hands. We don't have a big management team; it’s mostly just the family and a few workers who have been with us forever. We start early, often before the sun is fully up, to beat the heat of the afternoon. The village life is quiet, but the mill is usually buzzing. We don’t have much time for fancy talk. We just focus on the rice and making sure it’s ready for the market. It’s a way of life that hasn’t changed much over the years, and we are fine with that. It’s honest, hard work that keeps us going through the seasons without any real complaint from us.
