General Motor Works

If you find yourself heading down the Purulia Highway through the Mango, area, you’ll eventually see the Dhanna Singh Building. That’s where we set up General Motor Works. It’s an old-school workshop through and through. The walls are covered in calendars and old tools, and there is always a car or two up on the lifts. We don’t have a fancy waiting room with air conditioning or anything like that. Usually, people just stand around and talk while we look under the hood. The highway noise is constant, but you get used to it after a few weeks. We fix all kinds of engines, from the ones that are barely holding together to the newer ones with too many wires. My hands are usually stained with oil, and the floor has its fair share of spills despite us sweeping every evening. It’s a busy spot because the location is convenient for people traveling into the city. We don't use big words or try to sell people stuff they don't need. If a belt is squeaking, we tighten it. If a part is broken, we tell them it’s broken. It’s just how we were taught to do things here. We have a few regulars who stop by just to chat even when their cars are running fine. It’s a neighborhood shop that happens to be on a busy road, and we're okay with that life every single day.
