In the middle of Shankar Tekri Udyognagar, at C-2/39 Gidc Phase 1, you will find our workshop. Jamnagar is famous for brass, and we are just one of many small units doing this kind of work. The sound of metal hitting metal is something you hear all day long here. It is loud and it is constant. Our space is filled with machines that have been running for years. There are metal shavings on the floor, and the air always feels a bit heavy with the smell of oil and heat. We do not have any fancy air conditioning, just big open doors to let the breeze in. The work is hard and it makes your hands dirty, but it is what we know how to do. Most of the guys here have been working with brass since they were young. We have a small corner where we keep the finished parts in wooden crates. The office is just a tiny cabin with a wooden desk and a few chairs for visitors. We drink tea out of small glass cups several times a day. It helps keep the energy up. Sometimes we have to wait for the raw material to arrive, and that gives us a bit of a break. The trucks struggle to get into our narrow lane, so there is always some shouting and guiding involved. When the sun sets, we shut the heavy iron gates and head home.
