We are located on Rajendra Road, right opposite the G.P.O. It’s a very old part of town, and you can see the history in the buildings and the way the roads are laid out. Being across from the post office means there’s a constant stream of people and vehicles all day long. Our place is on the ground floor, so we see a lot of the street life. We deal with clothes, mostly stocking up and selling to smaller vendors. The shelves go all the way up to the ceiling, and we use a rickety old ladder to reach the stuff at the top. It’s a bit of a dusty job, and we’re always sneezing when we move the old stock. We don't have any air conditioning, just a few ceiling fans that creak as they spin. In the afternoons, when it gets quiet, we sit on the stools and watch the post office workers coming and going. The floor is made of old stone, and it stays cool even when it’s boiling outside. We don't have a website or anything fancy; most of our business comes from people who have been coming to this road for decades. It’s a simple way of doing things, based on handshakes and knowing who you’re talking to. We keep our records in big registers and drink tea out of small glass cups. It’s just how things have always been done here. Sometimes the traffic on Rajendra Road gets so bad we can't even hear ourselves talk, but we just wait for the light to change and start again.
