This is our spot at Plot No. 3926-27 in Phase-3 of the Gidc. It’s a bit larger than some of the other plots because we have the two numbers joined together. We do brass moulding here, just like a lot of other places around here, but we have our own way of doing things. The noise is constant—the roar of the burners and the clatter of metal hitting the concrete floor. We don't have a receptionist or a lobby to wait in. You just walk in and find someone covered in dust and sweat. We spend a lot of time prepping the sand for the moulds. It’s messy work, and your hands never really get clean. The air is always thick with the smell of the foundry. We keep the big fans going, but they don't do much against the furnace heat in the peak of summer. It’s a lifestyle, I guess. You get used to the sweat and the heavy lifting and the long hours. We don’t use any complicated software to run the business. We keep track of everything in a big ledger book and on scraps of paper stuck to the wall near the door. It works for us. We focus on the metal. If the brass is good and the mould is right, the part comes out fine. That’s what matters at the end of the shift. We are just a bunch of workers at Plot 3926-27, keeping the tradition of brass work going.
