Sankal Hospital

Gandhi Market in Orai is always loud. There’s a lot of shouting and bikes going past Sankal Hospital all day long. We’ve been in this part of Jalaun for a good bit of time. The market is right there, so you hear the vendors selling vegetables while we are inside. It’s a bit of a squeeze sometimes because space is tight in this area. People come in from the market when they feel a bit dizzy or if they’ve had a small accident. We just have a few beds and the basics. It’s a practical place. We don’t spend much on decorations because we are too busy with the people walking in. The floor is old tile and the walls could probably use a new coat of paint, but it works for what we need. I usually get here early to open up before the market gets really crowded. By noon, the heat in Orai is something else. We keep the fans running all the time. It’s not like those big city hospitals you see on TV. We know the local shopkeepers and they know us. If someone needs help, they just walk right in. We don't have a fancy reception desk with a computer that always works. Mostly, we just write things down in a big ledger. It gets the job done. Life here is busy but we like being right in the middle of things in Gandhi Market. Every day is different depending on who walks in.
