Jupiter Tanning Co. is based at 113 in the Leather Complex on Kapurthala Road. It’s a big industrial area, and you can usually tell you’re close by the smell of the hides. We have been working here for a long time. Our setup is pretty basic because the work we do is quite messy. Tanning leather involves a lot of water and different processes, so the floors are often wet or stained. We don’t have a nice lobby for guests. Usually, if you come to see us, you’ll find us in the back near the drums or the drying racks. It’s hard work and it’s loud, but it’s what we do. We’ve got a small crew of guys who have been with us for years. We know the leather business well because we’ve spent our whole lives in it. The complex gets very busy with trucks moving in and out all day long. Sometimes the road gets blocked, but we just work around it. We don't spend time making things look pretty. Our focus is just on the leather itself. We deal with raw skins and turn them into something usable for other factories. It’s a practical, hands-on business. There’s always dust in the air and the machines are always running. We just keep our heads down and do the work. It’s not glamorous, but it is an honest living.
