Working out of the Civil Hospital means things are rarely quiet or still. Dr Avtar Chand Clinic is situated here, and being part of the S M O Civil Hospital setup keeps all of us on our toes from morning until night. There’s a constant hum of people in the hallways and that heavy smell of antiseptic everywhere you turn. It’s a government hospital environment, so the focus is more on getting the actual work done than making the place look pretty or modern. Dr Avtar Chand stays busy with the rounds and the patients who wait in those long rows of metal benches. I handle the side of things that keeps our specific room functioning. We see a lot of people from all over who come here because it’s the main hospital in the area. It can be a bit overwhelming if you aren't used to the big crowds. There are files stacked up on the desk and the phone rings more than I’d like, and sometimes the air conditioning struggles when the sun is really hitting the building. It’s a very honest kind of work. You see everything here, the good and the bad. We don't have a private lobby or soft music playing in the background. It’s just medicine and people. The hospital grounds are quite large, so finding the right wing can be a challenge for some, but we try to help them.
