Down at P.O. Ramdaspura, on Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Marg, is where you’ll find Avinash Tanneries. It’s a place that smells of salt and raw hides, which is just part of the life when you run a tannery. The work is physically demanding and often quite messy. Our floors are usually wet, and the workers wear heavy boots to get through the day. We’ve been here in Ramdaspura for a long time, and everyone in the neighborhood knows the sound of our machinery. It’s a simple setup with large vats and drying areas. We don’t have a fancy reception area or a secretary greeting people at the door. Usually, you’ll just find one of us covered in dust or bits of leather, checking the quality of a batch. The sun hits the yard hard in the afternoon, which helps with the drying process but makes the work sweatier. We deal with various types of skins and follow the same steps that have been used for years. It’s about timing and knowing when the leather is ready. We don’t try to act like a big corporate office because we aren aren't one. We are just a group of people who know how to turn a raw hide into something useful. Sometimes the machines break down and we have to fix them ourselves, which takes up half the day. It’s just the way things are here on Ambedkar Marg.
