Akal Eye Hospital

If you go down Mall Road near Membro Chowk, you will find Akal Eye Hospital. It’s a busy part of town with a lot of traffic passing by all day. We spend a lot of time looking at eyes here. The building has been on Mall Road for a long time. Inside, the lights are kept quite bright so we can see what we are doing. We have those big machines for checking vision tucked into the corners of the rooms. The waiting area has rows of plastic chairs that are easy to wipe down. Sometimes it gets a bit loud when the families come in together, but that’s just how it is. We have a small desk near the entrance where we write down names in a big ledger book. It’s a lot of manual work, keeping track of everyone. Near Membro Chowk, the noise from the horns outside never really stops. We’ve grown used to it over the years. We keep some basic eye drops and supplies in the cabinets behind the counter. The walls have a few posters about how the eye works. It’s a practical place. We don’t have fancy rugs or expensive art. We just focus on the people who walk in needing help with their sight. Every morning we start by cleaning the lenses on all the equipment. It’s a repetitive job but it has to be done carefully. We try to keep the front steps clear of any trash that blows in from the road.
